My 9-month-old figured out the pop-up buttons within a day, and now she'll sit there pushing them down over and over. The three play modes are handy since I can switch to silent when I need her distracted without the noise.

The silent mode is a lifesaver during naps, since my little one still gets to practice pushing the animals down without any music blaring. The popping action is smooth enough for tiny hands, and she figured out the cause and effect within a day.

Bought this for my 8-month-old and the silent mode is a lifesaver during nap time when I still want her to play quietly. The pop-up buttons are just stiff enough that she really has to work at them, which is exactly the dexterity practice I was after.
