Learn how to choose, use, and clean reusable silicone straws for kids, with a step-by-step routine for the Dragon and Rocket 4-packs.
Quick answer
Choose the Rocket 4-pack for a firmer, dishwasher-safe straw and the Dragon 4-pack for a softer, flexible sip straw. Either way, follow a simple rinse, wash, and air-dry routine after every use.
Why silicone straws need a different routine
Silicone is soft and flexible, which makes these straws gentler for young mouths than hard plastic. That same softness means they can trap liquid or residue inside the tube if you only rinse the outside. A quick brush-through is the step most families skip.
Both the Rocket and Dragon packs are made from 100% silicone and are sized for children 3 years and older. They are not suitable for children under 36 months because small parts pose a choking hazard.
Rocket vs Dragon: what actually differs
The Rocket 4-pack comes in a lemonade mix and is labeled dishwasher safe to 100°C, microwave safe, and temperature safe from -40°C to 230°C. That makes it the more forgiving option if you want to wash in the dishwasher or warm the straw alongside other tableware.
The Dragon 4-pack comes in a shitaki mix and is described as a soft, flexible sip straw for everyday use. The catalog does not list the same temperature or dishwasher claims for this pack, so treat it as a hand-wash-first option unless the packaging says otherwise.
How to use and clean silicone straws for kids
- Check the age and condition: Use these straws only for children 3 years and older, and inspect each straw for tears, holes, or loose bits before every use. Common mistake: handing a straw to a younger sibling because it looks soft and harmless. Retire any straw that is torn or chewed through.
- Rinse immediately after drinking: Run warm water through the straw right after use so milk or smoothie residue does not dry inside the tube. Common mistake: leaving straws in a cup or lunch bag until the end of the day.
- Brush the inside of the tube: Use a narrow straw brush with warm water and a small amount of dish soap, pushing it all the way through. Common mistake: rinsing only the outside and assuming the inside is clean. If you do not have a straw brush, rinse thoroughly and replace the straw sooner.
- Wash according to the pack: For the Rocket straws, you can use the dishwasher up to 100°C or wash by hand. For the Dragon straws, hand-wash unless the packaging confirms otherwise. Common mistake: assuming all silicone straws have the same heat limits.
- Air-dry fully before storing: Stand the straws upright or lay them flat with both ends open so water can drain. Common mistake: putting damp straws straight into a closed cup or drawer. Store only when completely dry to avoid a musty smell.
- Match the straw to the cup: Choose a straw that fits snugly through the lid hole without forcing it. A straw that is too wide can be hard to suck, and one that is too narrow may slip through. Common mistake: using a straw that is much longer than the cup and tips out.
